Heart-warmingly and laugh-out-loud funny, with a great message about being yourself。 You will be saying Hilo's catchphrase of "outstanding" forever! Ten year old liked it and we finished it in three sessions。 We have already ordered #2 and #3 to read。

This is a great introduction to superhero graphic novels。 Funny, charming, dash of suspense/fear。 Like all superhero stories, ethics/morality play a role bit Winick is never pedantic。

A great, diverse, action-packed book that would be good for kids who think they don't like to read yet。 Deals with friends moving away, drifting away from friends, feeling like you're not special or feeling overlooked in a big family。 Very popular with elementary/middle school students。 Would make a good gift。 A great, diverse, action-packed book that would be good for kids who think they don't like to read yet。 Deals with friends moving away, drifting away from friends, feeling like you're not special or feeling overlooked in a big family。 Very popular with elementary/middle school students。 Would make a good gift。 。。。more

I really liked this book - it had heart and interesting characters。 Perfect for reluctant readers in our library。

My eight year old daughter talked my into reading this with her (we each read different characters' word bubbles) and was really surprised how much I enjoyed the story。 The language is pretty simple and easy; it's great for someone who can confidently sound out words but isn't ready for middle grade fiction yet。 My eight year old daughter talked my into reading this with her (we each read different characters' word bubbles) and was really surprised how much I enjoyed the story。 The language is pretty simple and easy; it's great for someone who can confidently sound out words but isn't ready for middle grade fiction yet。 。。。more

The story starts out with DJ introducing himself; he says he isn’t good at anything but being Gina’s friend。 A little later Hilo, a robot, crashes into the Earth wearing nothing but his underwear。 Hilo can fly and shoot lasers but doesn’t really understand Earth at first, he can’t remember where he came from at first, but it slowly returns after some time。 Hilo, DJ, and Gina become friends, and they have lots of fun together and some adventures。 Hilo takes on human traits and learns about Earth。 The story starts out with DJ introducing himself; he says he isn’t good at anything but being Gina’s friend。 A little later Hilo, a robot, crashes into the Earth wearing nothing but his underwear。 Hilo can fly and shoot lasers but doesn’t really understand Earth at first, he can’t remember where he came from at first, but it slowly returns after some time。 Hilo, DJ, and Gina become friends, and they have lots of fun together and some adventures。 Hilo takes on human traits and learns about Earth。 Eventually they have to face evil Razorwark Hilo’s enemy from an alien universe。 It is an exciting comic book adventure that would be an fun engaging read for students, especially those that love action and comics。 There's humor throughout the story and leaves you on a cliffhanger。 (Might have to read the second one!) I think a fun activity to do with this book would be to have students create their own comic, I think this would be fun for all students as some prefer drawing to writing! I think it would also be fun for students to brainstorm what they would do if they met a robot from space, and have students draw what their robot might look like!I think this is a WOW book because of how much I think students would like it。 The graphics are really cook, and it is an action packed, humorous, comic science fiction。 I really enjoyed it and think my future students would as well!! 。。。more

Look at me, reading comic book series, and giving them five stars—who would have thunk it? Well, comic books like Hilo, Dogman, Bird & Squirrel have progressed my kid’s reading skills from Bob’s Books readers to a 3rd grade level within a year’s time。 It’s not that he’s just passionate about the stories, but he loves reading every single word himself。 He won’t even tandem read with me, but that’s okay, because he loves reading to me。 And it’s so much better than reading about how Matt sat on a h Look at me, reading comic book series, and giving them five stars—who would have thunk it? The graphic novel Hilo has been part of the children's graphic novel section of my library for a number of years。 However, I didn't have any interest in reading this graphic novel。 Recently I saw the author, Judd Winick, on a juvenile graphic novels author panel。 He shared that when his son was younger that he was interested in reading graphic novels and the author chose the series "Bone" for his son to read。 His son promptly fell in love with the "Bone" graphic novel series to the point that th The graphic novel Hilo has been part of the children's graphic novel section of my library for a number of years。 However, I didn't have any interest in reading this graphic novel。 Recently I saw the author, Judd Winick, on a juvenile graphic novels author panel。 He shared that when his son was younger that he was interested in reading graphic novels and the author chose the series "Bone" for his son to read。 His son promptly fell in love with the "Bone" graphic novel series to the point that the father became jealous 🤣🤣 of all the attention his son was giving the Bone series and to the author of that series。 So, lo and behold, Judd Winick creates "Hilo" in order to recapture his son’s attention and it worked。 After hearing this story, I had to read this book for myself。 I can definitely see how this series will capture the adoration of elementary and middle school youth。 There's the inappropriate AAAAHHHH greetings, the very loud and multiple BURPS and the saving of the world of course。 All things necessary in a fun to read, attention grabbing graphic novel。 。。。more

I don’t usually put the books I read to the kids on here, but I these are the first “big kid” books I’m reading just to Vinny, and it’s been a sweet bonding experience。

My 5yo is super into this book, and I have to say it's really gripping! I wish the gender balance of the main characters was more equal。 My 5yo is super into this book, and I have to say it's really gripping! I wish the gender balance of the main characters was more equal。 。。。more

Hilarious, well paced tale of DJ, “who isn’t good at anything except being a friend,” being a friend to the boy who crashed to earth and his returned childhood friend。 Loved it。

D。J。 has an understandable chip on his shoulder。 All his siblings are high achievers in all that they do and the only thing he thinks he's good at is being friend with Gina。 So when Gina leaves him and he finds himself alone for years, D。J。 isn't in the best of places。 That is until Hilo arrives in a comet of fire from outer space and changes his life forever。 Hilo has no memory of where he has come from, only that a creature of evil intent, Razorwark, is coming to Earth to destroy it。 It is up D。J。 has an understandable chip on his shoulder。 All his siblings are high achievers in all that they do and the only thing he thinks he's good at is being friend with Gina。 So when Gina leaves him and he finds himself alone for years, D。J。 isn't in the best of places。 That is until Hilo arrives in a comet of fire from outer space and changes his life forever。 Hilo has no memory of where he has come from, only that a creature of evil intent, Razorwark, is coming to Earth to destroy it。 It is up to D。J。, Hilo and a friend long thought lost to put a stop to this。 The first in the graphic novel series from Judd Winick, this is an absolute essential for any primary school library or classroom。 Both my boys (5&6 when they started reading the series) adore it and so do I。 The pacing is great, the humour carefree with the potential for some touching pathos。 Yes there are explosions galore but there is some smart storytelling here and the characters, their needs and flaws as well as their hopes and dreams will speak to all readers。 Great fun but full of subtle smarts。 。。。more

This was really good, funny, exciting, entertaining。 Definitely reminds me of Zita the Space Girl, in a good way。 Would recommend to any elementary student who likes fantastical tales about robots and other dimensions and such, or just burp jokes。 :)

I read this book because my seven year old brother absolutely loves this series, and honestly it’s a really fun start to this series。This series has a plot for the whole series rather than every book having its own plot which is a common thing in book series for this age group。Overall it seems like a fun series and I will keep reading。

This book is a great graphic novel about a robot coming to earth to remind a little boy that he is special in his own way。 I like how the book gives kids a chance to learn new vocabulary as the robot reads through dictionaries and encyclopedias in order to use fun, new words。 I would recommend this book for 2nd - 4th grade kids who may not enjoying reading basic books as it gives a more exciting aspect of reading and living through a story。

Another awesome graphic novels series according to my 8 year old
